Before you decide if one goal fits with your goals program, you should work on that goal through a process that can help determine if you should pursue that goal at the moment. This can be time consuming but can save you a lot of time and frustration by eliminating goals that don’t work for you at this time and helping to identify what you need to focus on right now.
1. Aim your goal: Your goal should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely. Remember: some goals should be big and some goals should be far-reaching.
Important goals should be broken down into smaller pieces to ensure day-to-day accountability. For example, if you want to lose 50 pounds this year, you can break that down into a goal of 4 pounds per month or 1 pound per week and then work out how many calories you need to cut or burn to achieve that weekly. 2. Determine how you will benefit from the goal: People often fail to reach their goals because they focus on costs rather than benefits. “If I lose weight,” they think, “I will have to give up and do this.” or “If I quit smoking, I know I’m going to gain weight and I’m going to be miserable and hard to live with.”
Instead of focusing on the negatives, think about the benefits you will enjoy. While setting goals, make a list of tangible rewards that you will get when you reach each goal. Every time you start asking yourself if the pursuit of a goal is worth the effort, simply pull out the list of benefits and read it out loud again.
3. List the obstacles that stand between you and your goal: You need to identify the obstacles in order to be realistic and avoid surprise. Many times people have come across that they had no idea that pursuing such-and-such a goal would be so difficult, demanding, time-consuming, and involving so many unexpected pitfalls. Careful planning in advance removes much of this disappointment, but you must understand that you cannot always see the obstacles ahead. This is why commitment, attitude, responsibility and focus on benefits remain constant imperatives. Patience is very important. Just remember that by keeping your focus on the goal, you can see the benefits, not just the drawbacks.
Very few people are excited about obstacles. Huge traffic when you’re in a hurry or when you’re in freezing cold right before a long planned vacation doesn’t create excitement in your life. Disappointments or setbacks of any kind are rarely looked upon with enthusiasm. However, these difficulties should generate excitement, if for no other reason than that overcoming obstacles makes you strong and enables you to ascend to higher heights.
